Kate Moss's Juliet Cap Veil: A Timeless Choice
When Kate Moss married Jamie Hince in July 2011, her choice of veil sparked renewed interest in a style that hadn't been widely seen since the 1940s. The Juliet cap, with its snug-fitting crown and flowing tulle, suddenly felt fresh again.
Moss's veil, designed by John Galliano, was crafted from champagne-coloured tulle with delicate floral embroidery and rhinestones. It fell to the floor in two tiers, complementing her gold-embellished slip dress perfectly. The effect was both vintage and modern—understated glamour with just enough edge.
The History of the Juliet Cap
The Juliet cap takes its name from Shakespeare's heroine, inspired by drawings that showed Juliet wearing a small fitted cap. The style became hugely popular in the 1920s and 1930s, when brides paired these veils with bias-cut gowns and art deco details.
What distinguishes a Juliet cap from other veil styles is its construction. The cap is gathered and secured above each ear with combs, sitting snugly across the crown before falling into a veil at the back. It's a structured piece that still manages to look romantic and ethereal.
Why the Style Endures
The appeal of a Juliet cap lies in its versatility. It frames the face whilst allowing your hair to be seen—particularly useful if you've spent time on an intricate updo or want to show off statement earrings. The cap can be worn at the crown for a softer effect, or pulled lower over the forehead for authentic 1920s drama.
The style works beautifully with both vintage-inspired gowns and sleek modern dresses. It's especially lovely if your dress has interesting back detail, as the forward-sitting cap doesn't obscure the dress itself.
Making a Juliet Cap Veil
In our Bath studio, each Juliet cap veil is made by hand, one at a time. The cap requires particular attention—the gathers must be positioned precisely above each ear, and the combs need to sit securely without causing discomfort during a long day.
We source our tulle from English and Italian mills, choosing materials for both beauty and longevity. Our Edna veil features a delicate lace edge around the cap, available in lengths from fingertip to cathedral. Like all our pieces, it can be personalized with embroidered initials or your wedding date.
The construction isn't quick—these veils take time to make properly. But that's rather the point. We're creating something designed to be kept, perhaps even passed down.
Real Brides
Since Kate Moss's wedding, we've made Juliet cap veils for hundreds of brides. What strikes me most is how each bride makes the style completely her own. Some choose cathedral length for drama, others prefer the subtlety of a fingertip veil. Some wear their caps with formal updos, others with barely-there styling.
You can see more of our real brides wearing Juliet caps on the blog. They've worn these veils everywhere from intimate garden ceremonies to grand cathedral settings, paired with everything from vintage lace to sleek contemporary gowns.
Choosing Your Veil
If you're drawn to the Juliet cap, consider your dress style and venue, but most importantly, how you want to feel. A Juliet cap should feel natural, not costume-like. Think about whether you prefer the simplicity of a cut edge or the detail of lace trim, and which length will work with your dress and setting.
For more guidance on veil styles generally, our wedding veil guide covers everything from materials to lengths to how different styles work with various dress shapes.
Kate Moss's veil did more than complement a dress. It reminded brides that certain styles endure for good reason—they work. The Juliet cap speaks to something timeless: the desire to feel both beautiful and authentic, to honour tradition whilst expressing individual style.
In our Bath studio, we'll continue making these veils by hand, taking the time to get the details right. Because some things are worth doing properly.
